The rich diversity of India’s culture and deep spirituality is an energy you can feel permeating so powerfully through the land and the people.
There is no place like it on earth. Many of the experiences you can have here are once a lifetime experiences. Or can only be experienced in India because of their specific ancient cultural and spiritual traditions. There are so many different ways in which you can have these experiences and truly feel connected to the ways of life in India.
WAYS TO EXPERIENCE THE TRADITIONAL CULTURE AND SPIRITUALITY OF INDIA:
As I mentioned before, simply being in India is a cultural experience. From the moment I stepped off the plane, it was like a sensory overload in every which way imaginable.
Whether I was walking around a city, living in villages, exploring the heart of the Himalayas, travelling between places or just going out for dinner, I felt like I was having a true authentic Indian experience.
There are so many ways to experience the culture of India because of their diverse customs, traditions and religions.
India has many religions across the country:
- Hinduism
- Islam
- Christianity
- Sikhism
- Buddhism
- Adivasi
- Jainism
- Others such as Judaism, Baha’i Faith, Atheism
If you travel all throughout India, you will see the different religions and cultures reflected in the architecture, sacred spaces, traditional clothing, festivals, crafts and cuisines.
How to experience the full diversity of Indian culture:
- Interacting with the local people – staying with local families, visiting sacred places, attending public gatherings and events.
- Trying the different typical dishes in each place you visit
- Visiting different temples
- Attending traditional festivals in India
- Attend workshops that teach you the skills of the people – for example: Buddhist artwork classes, cooking classes, silver jewellery classes, yoga and dance classes, Hindu classes etc.
- Volunteering programs – you could volunteer anywhere from the farmlands to the cities to learn through an intimate experience with the ways of life in India.
- Visit historic sites – learn about them through a guided tour.
- Attend an Indian Wedding – I was not able to attend an Indian wedding in India, but I did attend one in Mauritius, and it was such a memorable and joyous experience!
- Stay with a host family or in an Indian or Tibetan village.
- Go on nature adventures – in places where there is a deep spiritual connection to Hinduism and Buddhism.
- Using public transport – such as tuk-tuks, trains and buses. I met so many people on public transports that gifted me with many memorable experiences.
- Visit the most cultural and spiritual places in India – which we will discuss in detail below.
It is going to be really difficult to only choose 16 of the most cultural and spiritual places in India. Because the country is so massive, and you really cannot go wrong with choosing where to visit in India. But this list will give you so much value and guidance on where to visit for the most diverse cultural and spiritual experiences in India that YOU want to have. And many of these places are surrounded by breathtaking nature that adds to the magic of travelling in India.
16 spiritual and cultural places to visit in india:
1. VaranAsi
Varanasi is one of seven sacred places in all of India. And one of the world’s oldest cities, containing over 2000 temples. The city is situated along the left bank of the holy Ganga River.
People from all over the world come to visit this sacred city. Varanasi is where the deceased, and those at the end of their lives, come to be delivered from their sins and reach nirvana after life on earth.
Hindu families come to pay their respects to deceased loved ones through an ancient ritual of burning the bodies in ceremony on the Ganga in one of the 2 burning Ghats (Manikarnika, the main one, and Harishchandra). This is a cultural, spiritual and religious experience that will stick with you for the rest of your life. And something that you will not see anywhere else in the world.
You can either organise a guided tour beforehand. Or you can walk to the main Burning Ghat where you will be met by one of the people who work and assist in the ceremonies. The latter is what I did. And I could not have asked for a more memorable experience in this powerful ceremony.
The moment you walk into the Burning Ghat, you cannot help but feel the powerful energy of it all.
The man who met me at the entrance guided me through the entire structure from beginning to end. He told me all about how the ceremonies are carried out and the significance of the rituals.
I was able to watch a family performing their rituals in ceremony. To bear witness to one of the most spiritual experiences in India was a feeling I will never forget.
OTHER CULTURAL EXPERIENCES IN VARANSI:
Varanasi is also a place to visit temples and mosques, appreciate the ancient architecture, surrounding nature and Ganga River, experience the music, festivals and flavours of India.
Another way to experience the Burning Ghats is by boat ride. I also did this, and it was such a unique experience. Although you are not in the middle of it all, you can get a clear view of the Ghats and the beautiful architecture and artwork of Varanasi. I would highly recommend doing this.
When the Ganga River is low, you can take a boat across the water to the sandbank which has a unique landscape with a view of the entire city along the riverbank. This is especially stunning at sunset time.
The energy and impact that Varanasi had on me is something I will never be able to put into words. You need to experience it for yourself to fully understand the feeling that comes with being in the heart of the life and death cycle of India.
2. Jaisalmer
Rich culture, art, folk performances, traditions, typical foods and the most breathtaking desert scenery in the heart of India. What more could you ask for in an authentic Indian experience?
Situated in the Thar desert is Jaisalmer. Known as the “Golden City” and listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Besides being mesmerized by the perfection of the sand dunes and the patterns created by the winds across the desert, you will have a fulfilling cultural experience in Jaisalmer.
The many experiences waiting for you in Jaisalmer:
- Explore the Jaisalmer Fort – you can also see the Jain Temples.
- Folk performances – enjoy traditional dances and music.
- Shopping and walking around the streets of the town – you will have so many authentic experiences in India just by exploring the towns. Cows in the streets, drinking Indian Chai in shops while looking at unique art, clothing and souvenirs and the daily life of the people as they go about their days are what India is all about.
- Walk around the Gadi Sagar Lake – there is also a hill that you can walk up for spectacular views of the Fort.
- Local crafts and artisans – India has some of the most beautifully handcrafted artisanal pieces and art. It is always great to support the local people whose home you are visiting.
- Indulge in the cuisines
- Wear traditional Rajasthani clothing – you can do this on some of the tours that local agencies offer. I did this with a family I was friends with in Pushkar and it was such a special experience.
- Stargazing – the desert is an amazing place to admire the abundance of stars due to no artificial light.
- Storytelling – the stories of the desert are the perfect way to learn about the significance and the energy of this special region.
- Jeep rides or Quad Biking in the desert
- Camping in the desert under the starry skies – A MUST!
Jaisalmer is one of the most unbelievable spiritual and cultural places in India because of how breathtaking the surrounding landscapes are, while still getting to experience the traditional ways of life in India.
ETHICAL ECO-TRAVEL ADVICE FOR JAISALMER:
PLEASE DO NOT RIDE THE CAMELS IN JAISALMER.
I know it might seem ethical because everyone does it and we are used to seeing camels being ridden by humans and it is part of the Indian culture to ride them across the desert.
But these camels are badly taken care of. The camel rides are not ethical, it is inhumane to ride them.
During my time in Rajasthan, I would frequently see dead camels on the roads and in villages. I saw them being treated horribly. They are very unhealthy and malnourished.
There are many other activities to fill your time in Jaisalmer that you do not need to ride the camels.
3. Pushkar
I called Pushkar my home for many months, even during Covid times. And I will always recommend anyone who is visiting India to visit Pushkar.
It is just one of those places in India that will touch your heart in a very special way because of the deep cultural and spiritual presence of sacred Hindu practises here.
Pushkar Lake is one of the 5 most holy lakes in Hinduism. People come to cleanse themselves of sin in the lake. You will see many Babaji’s around the lake in ceremony, music sessions and festivals in Pushkar. The holy city is built all around the lake with the most divine architecture I have seen in India. The lake is especially beautiful at sunset and there is such a peaceful atmosphere across the lake at night.
I would recommend that you stay in Pushkar for at least 2 days. And if you have time then spend a few extra days here.
Pushkar is one of the most perfect spiritual and cultural places in India to soak up the full power energy of Indian culture. There is even a big community of national and foreign tourists here that add to whole vibe of Pushkar. Connecting with like-minded people and being a part of a beautiful community of people is something about India that all travellers love. (HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW TO FIND LIKE-MINDED COMMUNITY IN INDIA)
Not to mention, the people of Pushkar are so welcoming, there are lovely restaurants to eat at, there is an abundance of monkeys all around the lake and temples and the strong spiritual presence of Hinduism can be felt all throughout the town.
WHAT TO DO IN PUSHKAR:
- Holi Festival – if you are visiting early in the year, Holi Festival Of Colours is a wild experience and Pushkar is the best celebration of it in India.
- Walk around the Pushkar Lake – fringed with temples and stunning architecture, ceremonies, langurs and red-faced monkeys, water snakes, music and serene atmosphere, walking around the lake is a beautiful experience.
- Enjoy music, dance and gatherings around the lake – there is always something happening around the lake to enjoy.
- Sunset on the steps – every sunset there are gatherings of people, flow toys and music on the Ghats (steps) of the lake (Evening Aarti).
- Shopping, arts and crafts – you HAVE to go shopping in Pushkar! There are so many beautiful hand-crafted pieces to take home from your India travels.
- Belly Dancing, traditional dance classes and jewellery making classes.
- Drive around the desert and visit the gypsy camps on the outskirts of Pushkar – I would recommend taking a local person or a guide with you to do this if it is your first time in Pushkar. It is very safe; I went on my own to the gypsy camps all the time. But for anyone unfamiliar with India it is better to go with someone knowledgeable about the area because it can be overwhelming at first.
- Visit the Old Rangji Temple
- Hike the Savitri Temple – for spectacular views of the lake and Pushkar city with the surrounding mountain hills.
- Visit Brahma Temple – one of the most well-known and holiest temples in Pushkar
- Gurudwara Sahib Temple – a stunning Sikh temple.
AN extra special experience in pushkar that i do not see shared OFTEN on blogs that i loved doing all of the time:
Visit the surrounding nature and villages by Aloo Baba.
Aloo Baba is a man who has been eating nothing but potatoes for 45 plus years. You can ask anyone in Pushkar for directions to Aloo Baba, rent a scooter and enjoy a ride through the surrounding hills.
You just continue driving straight passed Aloo Baba’s temple towards another temple that is surrounded by Langur monkeys who are very friendly. The direction and road is very clear and safe.
This was one of my favourite things to do in Pushkar, to have a break from the city vibes and surround myself with nature. In monsoon season, the hills are so alive and green. The landscapes are really beautiful and you can go on small hikes around the hills. You can see goats, water buffalo, amazing peacocks, cows, sheep and monkeys.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF SCAMMERS:
I do not share these extra travel tips to scare anyone out of going to India in any way. India is one of the safest countries I have travelled to.
But you need to be alert and aware of scammers around the lake.
They will manipulate you into doing ceremonies around the lake for very high prices and pretend to be real Babaji’s when they are not. Many of these people do not have good intentions. Unless you have connected with a spiritual guide through someone reliable, I would not recommend taking part in these offerings.
Many women are also enticed into beautifully decorated temple rooms around the lake for ceremonies. They are taken advantage of because it is sold as a very traditional practise when it goes against the spiritual and religious practise of Hinduism.
Please be vigilant and only participate in activities and ceremonies that are safe.
4. Hampi
Hampi is, and has always been, one of the most popular destinations to visit in India. And once you set foot in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will understand why!

6. Tso Moriri
India would not have been complete for me without experiencing the rich Tibetan culture of the Himalayas. Tso Moriri was of my most memorable places for an authentic cultural and spiritual experience in all of India.
Situated at 4522m elevation in the state of Ladakh is Tso Moriri. Getting to this remote little village nestled amongst the grandest snowy Himalayan Mountain valleys is no easy feat. But the reward of experiencing a place that few people travel to is beyond your wildest dreams!
The Tibetan villages of Northern India are distinctively different to the Indian villages.
The energy, the atmosphere, the unbelievable nature scenery, it all felt so surreal to be there. The colours of the lake and mountains are mesmerising. It is a true mountain and culture lover’s paradise!
HOW TO FIND ACCOMODATION IN THE VILLAGE AND THE EXPERIENCE OF IT:
The Tibetan villagers are extremely welcoming. You can have the most authentic Tibetan village experiences in Tso Moriri in a quaint village called Korzok.
I did not book an accommodation beforehand. I arrived in Korzok and asked a few villagers for an available homestay. This is a common way of finding accommodations in India. I was blessed to find an amazing homestay with the sweetest family in the heart of the village with a stunning view of the scenery.
Although this worked for me, you might want to ask local tour agencies for guidance on accommodation options. There are not many options available because it is a remote village. And do not expect any luxuries.
You will most likely be living as the villagers do, which is what I loved so much about the entire experience. There is no reception, running water, hot water or toilets in the homestays. You will be given water by the host family and go to the toilet in a hole outside. I do remember there being one hostel along the main entrance road of the village that had a few more amenities.
DISCLAIMER: This information is from my own experience in Tso Moriri. Some things may have changed since I was there in 2021.
You can also camp in designated areas nearby the village. You are not permitted to camp anywhere on the banks of the lake because it is a protected reserve.
There are also not many restaurants. We found one restaurant at the entrance of the village that served decent meals.
I know this all might sound overwhelming. But I love giving you as much helpful information as possible to feel prepared for the experience. I cannot stress enough how much of a worthy experience this was!
AMAZING THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND TSO MORIRI:
- Walk down to the lake – literally one of the most breathtaking sceneries I have ever laid eyes on! The blue and green hues of the lake with the colourful snow peaked Himalayas surrounding the entire area, the horses and cows grazing so majestically, and just the peaceful serenity of it all was indescribable.
- Explore Korzok Village – authentic Tibetan village architecture and views of the surroundings.
- See all of the herders bring their animals home from grazing all day – this is such a sweet and beautiful experience! You could even hold a baby sheep or goat if you ask the herders kindly.
- Tso Moriri viewpoint – a small hill for a great view of the nature, a photographer’s heaven!
- Visit the Korzok Monastery

12. Taj Mahal
I personally, am a nature traveller at heart. But WOW! The Taj Mahal was so much more impressive, majestic, extravagant and breathtaking than I ever imagined.
I stopped in Agra on the train from Pushkar to Varanasi. The Taj Mahal was not really on my radar, but after going there I am so happy I did not miss out on this beautiful marvel.
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Her remains are housed within the Taj Mahal palace. And is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in honour of India’s rich culture and heritage.
The absolute perfection of the Mughal architecture brings romance and love to life. It is a white-marble mausoleum work of art. Your eyes are blessed with the striking beauty of the palace as you walk through the entrance of the grounds. I felt like it held such royal King and Queen energy.
Everything to do while visiting the Taj Mahal:
- Be there for sunrise – the highlight of my experience! No people with the most magical setting of the colourful sky as the backdrop for this fairytale palace.
- Walk around the entire grounds – the palace is a sight to behold from every vantage point. Be sure to take your photos as soon as you arrive in the morning because it is impossible to get pictures without any people right next to you later in the day.
- Walk in and around the palace – admire the intricate patterns and mosaics of the marble walls.
- Visit the Mosque and Mihman Khama guesthouse – situated besides the Taj Mahal.
- Taj Mahal from the Yamuna river – for a unique Taj Mahal experience. You walk around the backroad of the Taj Mahal where local boat drivers are waiting to take you for a ride with a beautiful reflective view of the palace.
OTHER THINGS TO DO WHILE IN AGRA:
- Visit the Agra Fort – a Mughal residence from 1573 with masterful architecture and a gorgeous pavilion from which you can see the Yamuna River and Taj Mahal.
- Watch Mohabbat at the Cultural and Convention Centre – a performance depicting Shah Jahan’s love for his wife.
I can definitely see why the Taj Mahal is so iconic to India. The romantic aura of this sentiment to true love is sure to sweep you off your feet.
A FEW IMPORTANT TIPS WHEN VISITING THE TAH MAHAL:
– GO EARLY!! I cannot stress this enough. Be there at the break of sunrise. I was there as soon as the gates opened, I was standing at the very front of a few people who arrived later than me. And I was able to be in the grounds without any people, my photos are also people free!
– Dress appropriately. Wear clothing with coverage, you can also use scarves to cover up your shoulders. As with everywhere in India you need to dress according to where you are visiting.
